NEED TO KNOW

  • The new trailer for The Summer I Turned Pretty is here!
  • Season 3 promises drama between Conrad and Jeremiah
  • Belly’s mother also tells Jeremiah and Belly that they are not ready for an engagement

It’s time for one last summer at Cousins Beach.

On Wednesday, June 11, Prime Video released the trailer for the highly anticipated third and final season of The Summer I Turned Pretty, which premieres on the streamer July 16.

The upcoming episodes pick up two years after Belly (Lola Tung) chose Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) over his brother Conrad (Christopher Briney) in the dramatic season 2 finale, and sees the now college-aged protagonist reckoning with the consequences of her decision when Conrad comes back into her life.

The new trailer shines a light on more details surrounding their relationship, with Belly narrating, “When I’m with J, everything is easier, but everywhere I go there’s a memory of Conrad.” A newly revealed scene also shows Belly’s mother, Laurel (Jackie Chung), telling Jeremiah and Belly that they are not ready for marriage as young college students.

The trailer also confirms that Conrad followed his late mother Susannah Fisher (Rachel Blanchard)’s dying wish of moving to the West Coast. The season will pick up with Conrad in pursuit of a career in medicine in San Francisco.

Another detail revealed is that Belly’s best friend Taylor Jewel (Rain Spencer)’s relationship with Belly’s brother Steven Conklin (Sean Kaufman) appears to continue into Taylor’s college years. Steven is seen visiting Taylor at her college sorority house.

Conrad is later seen consulting Taylor for advice about his plan to come back into Belly’s life – and presumably fight for their love. The trailer features two Taylor Swift songs – “Daylight” from Lover soundtracks the first montage of Jeremiah, while Swift’s title track from Red soundtracks Conrad’s entrance. A notable lyric from the track is “loving him comes in flashbacks, and echoes,” mirroring Belly’s narration heard in the trailer.

The new trailer also hints at another reunion besides that of Belly and Conrad — Belly’s parents. Season 1 of The Summer I Turned Pretty picked up following her parents’ divorce, and explored her mother’s relationship with fellow newly-single writer Cleveland Castillo (Alfredo Narciso).

Per the official synopsis, season 3 finds Belly “looking forward to another summer in Cousins with her soulmate, Jeremiah,” and “her future seems set, until some core-shaking events bring her first love Conrad back into her life.”

“Now on the brink of adulthood, Belly finds herself at a crossroads and must decide which brother has her heart.”

Jenny Han, who wrote the trilogy of bestselling books the series is based on, has teased that the final season is going to leave fans “devastated and heartbroken,” because that’s how a “successful love triangle” looks.

“Because if the answer feels really clear and easy, then there’s no real conflict. No matter what you do, someone’s going to be hurt by it,” she told Entertainment Weekly.

She also really wanted every audience member to have “a true show-watching experience where they find themselves with bated breath being like, ‘What’s going to happen next?’ “

“A lot of people, literally, are just watching the show and they’re seeing it for the first time. But you also want to serve the people who have been fans for 15 years, who are excited about certain things. But you can’t make everyone happy,” she said. “I wish I could make everyone happy. But I have to please myself first, as a storyteller, to feel proud of the thing that I’m making.”
