The gig was anything but painful.
Ashley Johnson, who played the adorable tyke Chrissy Seaver on two seasons of Growing Pains, stopped by the Pod Meets World recording studio to chat with Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong, and Will Friedle.
During the convo, the gang got to talking about some of Johnson’s more notable costars from her time on the ABC sitcom, including the Oscar-winning actor with predictable dating habits, Leonardo DiCaprio. And she had nothing but nice things to say.

“Every memory that I have from [Growing Pains] is so good,” Johnson said about the show that costarred Alan Thicke, Joanna Kerns, Kirk Cameron, Tracey Gold, and Jeremy Miller. “I feel like they were such a family on that show already because I came in on the sixth season.”
Her character, Chrissy, was born in the fourth season, was a toddler in season 5, and, thanks to the miracle of television logic, sprouted into a 5-year-old in season 6.
Also joining the cast toward the end of the run was the character Luke Brower, a homeless teen taken in by the Seaver family. He was, of course, played by the future star of Titanic, The Wolf of Wall Street, and this autumn’s One Battle After Another, Leonardo DiCaprio.
“He was so good,” Johnson remembered. “Like, you could tell so early on. I think at that time he had just finished filming This Boy’s Life, and that hadn’t come out yet, so he was on sort of the last bit of the season for Growing Pains.”

Johnson continued, “I just remember, everyone was like, ‘This kid so good.’ Like, he just had it. We felt it. He was great. But he was, like, a teenager, you know? He was a kid, but I remember he was so sweet to me.”
DiCaprio was 16 during his time on the series.

Johnson also talked about the paterfamilias of the Seaver clan, the late Alan Thicke.
“The last time I saw everybody, not the greatest, but I went to Alan Thicke’s funeral,” she shared. “He was the greatest. I mean, as a first TV dad, I just remember I loved hugging him and just being around him. He was wonderful.”
Thicke died in December 2016 at the age of 69.
Johnson’s work as an adult is known to many, with a recurring role on The Killing, a lead on Blindspot, and doing voice work for a great many popular video games, including The Last of Us. Indeed, she had a voice cameo during the second season of the HBO adaptation of the title, a special nod to the die-hard fans.
