2 Dead After Car Plunges Over 300-Feet Cliff and Crashes into Ocean

Two people have reportedly died after a car went over a 300-foot cliff in England. 

On Friday, June 6, the vehicle veered off the road and plunged into the water at Alum Bay in the Isle of Wight, which lies 1.2 miles off the south coast of England, the BBC reported. Two people were confirmed to have died by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police on Sunday, June 8, according to the outlet.

“We were called at 7.21 p.m. this evening after a car, which was being driven along Alum Bay New Road, left the road, came off the cliff top and came to rest in the water below,” authorities said in a statement Friday, according to The Telegraph,

Police were joined in their recovery efforts by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance team, the Ventnor and Needles Coastguard Rescue Teams, lifeboat crews, firefighters and critical care paramedics at the scene, the BBC and Isle of Wight County Press reported.

Photos released of the scene of the incident show the car almost fully submerged at the bottom of the cliff. 

According to witnesses, a man was pulled from the wreckage in the water and brought to shore by rescue team members, reported the Daily Mail. Witnesses also reportedly claimed that they saw response teams carrying out CPR on one of the victims, the outlet added. 

The search and rescue teams stopped their recovery operation in the early hours of the morning on Saturday, June 7, the Daily Mail reported.

An investigation into the cause of the incident is ongoing. Enquiries on behalf of the coroner were made at an address in the busy sailing town of Cowes, the BBC reported, citing the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary.

“Formal identification has yet to take place, but their next of kin have been notified,” a police spokesperson said in a statement on Sunday, June 8, per Isle of Wight County Press.
