In the years since they went their separate ways, the pair have continued to speak highly of each other.

“I’m really lucky that I have a really good co-parent and partner in Jennifer Garner, the kids’ mom, who’s wonderful and great and we work together well,” Affleck told GQ in April.

He also recalled to the outlet how he and Garner used to speak to their children when stories about them were on newsstands.

“They would see something on a supermarket stand, we would say, ‘Well, you know, this isn’t always true, because if it were, you would have 15 brothers or sisters or whatever the number of stories is where they said that your mom was pregnant,’ ” Affleck said.

“I know what’s going on in my life. And also, really more importantly, my kids know,” he added.

Garner and Affleck first met on the set of Pearl Harbor in 2002 and starred together in 2003’s Daredevil, but it wasn’t until 2004 that they made their first public appearance as a couple while at a Boston Red Sox game during the World Series.

They then quietly tied the knot a year later in the Turks and Caicos and announced in June 2005 that they were expecting their first child.

In June 2015, days after their 10th wedding anniversary, the pair revealed they were getting a divorce. It was finalized in October 2018.

“When you have children with somebody, you’re connected to them forever,” Affleck told PEOPLE in 2020. “And I’m very lucky she is the mother of my children. I’m very grateful and respectful of her. Our marriage didn’t work, and that’s difficult. Both of us really believe that it’s important for kids to see their parents respect one another and get along, whether they’re together or not.”

Before honoring the Batman star on Father’s Day, Garner shared a clip on her Instagram Stories dedicated to her own dad, the late William John Garner which showed them happily walking outside with their hands in their pockets.

“Being fathered by someone who loves being a dad is a gift; my sisters and I know this and (lucky for us) all of our kids do, too,” she wrote. “Happy Father’s Day to the Dads, no matter where you are, to the uncles and grandfathers and father figures, too. We love you.”

William died in 2024 at the age of 85.
