What Lou Anarumo is looking for at cornerback position

Lou Anarumo highlighted what he is looking for at the cornerback position, where there is playing time available opposite of Charvarius Ward.

One position for the Indianapolis Colts where there will be some training camp competition this summer is at the cornerback position.

We, of course, know that Charvarius Ward will be at one of the outside positions and that Kenny Moore will be in the nickel. But when it comes to that second outside cornerback role opposite of Ward, that’s where playing time can be earned.

And in order to earn that playing time, defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo is ultimately looking for consistency.

“Just consistency of work, and that’s going to have to show throughout training camp, throughout the preseason games, to determine who’s going to get that job,” Anarumo said.

The reshaping of the cornerback room this offseason by GM Chris Ballard didn’t only involve signing Ward. He also brought in veteran Corey Ballentine to bolster the depth and drafted Justin Walley in the third round to join Jaylon Jones, JuJu Brents, and Samuel Womack.

“That competition there is great,” added Anarumo. “But you’ve got to be consistent. I don’t want a lot of ups and downs, especially at that position. I want to know what we’re going to get week in and week out.”

There is going to be a more aggressive and physical play style from the cornerback position in Anarumo’s defense, not to mention that the disguise-heavy scheme can put a lot on the plates of these defenders as well. But when executed properly, the variety of looks and late movement will throw a lot at opposing quarterbacks and keep them off balance.

Opposite of Ward, there will obviously be a Week 1 starter, but in Anarumo’s malleable and quick-to-adjust defensive system, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a rotation at that spot at times, depending on who the opponent is and what the matchup dictates.
